Curriculum

Featherbrook College will offer a contemporary approach to educating students. Learning will take place in an environment that is conducive to preparing children for a rapidly changing world that demands technological (ICT) capacity and knowledge, heightened interpersonal skills, significant emotional intelligence, resilience, plus strong literacy and numeracy skills. Our students will learn and thrive in flexible, purposefully built and responsive learning spaces that will support and inform optimal learning and teaching. The spaces will allow students to engage through collaborative structures and groupings. Teachers will teach in collaborative learning communities to provide personalised learning options for each student. The relationships developed between teachers and teachers, teachers and students; and students and students will support learning and achievement. These relationships will be intentionally developed and nurtured.

Professionalism, instructional capacity and accountability of our teachers will be foundational to the education students receive. Teacher quality is crucial for optimal student outcomes and so our energies will be strategically directed towards coaching and capacity building of our teaching staff. High expectations of our students will underpin the rich challenges and learning opportunities provided for all students to strive to be the very best they can be. Information and Communication Technologies will form an integral part of our students’ learning at Featherbrook College. Digital Technologies are a component of the Victorian Curriculum and will be explicitly taught, accessed and used to enrich student learning, personalize student learning and support creative learning.

Featherbrook College will organise learning programs based on the mandated state Victorian Curriculum and structured around a P – 2 (Early Years model), Years 3 / 4, Years 5 / 6, Years 7 / 8 and Year 9. Broadly Foundation, Breadth and Depth and Pathways.

The core curriculum areas of Literacy and Numeracy will be central to the College’s education provision and timetabled so that teaching teams can tailor their programs for each individual student.

Teachers will address the key learning areas of English and Mathematics in dedicated time allocations, along with specialist provision of Physical Education, Visual Arts, Performing Arts and LOTE Japanese, while drawing on an inquiry approach through the Inquiry Units to address other curriculum areas such as science, humanities, technologies and the capabilities. Teachers will plan and deliver digital technology provision through explicit instruction and through all curriculum areas.
