NAIDOC Week

13.11.20

Yesterday the year 5/6 students took the opportunity of the commemoration of Remembrance Day occurring during NAIDOC Week, to investigate the involvement of Indigenous Australians in war.

So far this week the students have looked at Indigenous symbolism in varies art and writing systems and yesterday they talked discussed symbolism of the poppy. They watched a short BTN clip about Indigenous men enlisting in WW1 with the key reasons being equality and income. The students unpacked the reasons these things were so important and discussed the continued involvement of Indigenous Australians in our armed forces. Due to the previous lesson on symbolism the students were then asked if they could come up with a special symbol that could signify Indigenous Australians’ involvement in the armed forces. Above are some of their creations.
