Farewell Year 9 Class of 2020

Yesterday the very first Year 9 students celebrated their graduation from Featherbrook College. These students are the inaugural Year 9 cohort and will always hold a special place in the history of the school. The celebration included speeches from students, teachers as well as a principal address.

Year 7 's Build toys

Our Year 7 students have been their best creative selves over this last term. Inspired by the opportunity to design and then make their design, the products represent the effort and processes along with appreciation for the materials worked with. Their teacher Ms Tavares – Green gave the students a brief to create a slot together toy of an animal that needed to be anatomically correct, safe for children to play with and use a variety of skills in the workshop.

Year 2 Virtual Sleepover

Ingenuity and creativity were the ingredients that made for such a memorable and memory making experience for our year 2 students last night at the Virtual Sleepover. Our short history has shown that the Year 2 students begin their school camping experience by leaving mum and dad for one night and sleepover at school with friends and in a familiar place.

Victoria Police Visit

Today Senior Constable Matt Harris came to our college to spend some time with our senior student cohort and to share some of the work that law enforcement does. As part of a community building program along with careers focus, the students gained greatly and respectful relationships were built.

Featherbrook College has, from its inception, ensured our students have enjoyed an all round educational experience. While literacy and numeracy are our core and key learning areas, providing a balance with The Arts is most important. Performing Arts allows our students to enjoy, music, dance and drama. We have recently taken possession of a new instrument which happens to be one of my favorite.

In conversation last week with Physical Education teacher Ms Hamilton-Scott, I was intrigued to find out that not only do we have a very strong cricket following by Featherbrook College boys, but that there is a strong following of the game, by many of our girl students.

Breakfast Club

Today we began the trial of the School Breakfast Club Program. This is a Department of Education Initiative and is sponsored by Food Bank Victoria. This program is free of charge and open to all students Prep to Year 9.

What a surprise some of our Prep students had as they were leaving the school this afternoon. Almost hidden by the tan bark in the garden bed near the stadium, a baby bird lay helpless and alone. Two Featherbrook College prep students swung into action!

Last Wednesday the college paused at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate Remembrance Day, marking the date when conflict on the Western Front ended. It was the end of the First World War.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

Master Chef Burger Challenge

Last Thursday the year 8/9 students were provided with a vast array of ingredients and the theme of “Burgers”. The students were given 1hour 30minutes to produce a Masterchef worthy burger, full of flavour, style and presentation that were judged by Featherbrook staff.

Tomorrow is a special day in the world calendar. It is a day where teachers around the world are duly recognised for the incredible role they play in shaping the hearts and minds of our young people. Year 3 Students Test Their Parachutes

I received a wonderfully written invitation from Samuel, a student in Year 3, to join the Year 3 students on Friday afternoon to test the capability of the parachutes they had designed and built. Of course I accepted the invitation.

Footy Colours day

On Friday 16th of October Featherbrook College will participate in the Fight Cancer Foundation’s Footy Colours Day. To help raise awareness for this cause Featherbrook College will be encouraging students to wear scarves, beanies and guernseys of their favourite team from the various football/basketball/soccer/netball or other relevant sporting codes.

Yesterday marked the beginning of Spring; a welcome sign of warmer weather and perhaps symbolic of turning the corner on what has been an Autumn and Winter like none other. Spring represents optimism, brightness, colour and hope. The Year 9 students have been exploring the historical symbolism of the Australian iconic Wattle.

Secondary Students Celebrate Science Week

Science Week gave students in years 7 and 8 the opportunity to try some science at home, using materials that were available to them. Students were provided with some websites to explore for inspiration and they discovered some fascinating investigations. Maybe you could have a go at home too!

Last week I enjoyed being a Visual Art class with Mr Nick McKinnis and year 1 students. The focus was on French artist Henri Matisse. Following the workshop, the students were invited to take inspiration from the artist’s techniques and create their own masterpieces. Read more for some of the creative student art pieces.

Celebrating Science Week Through Mathematics

Students in Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying learning about some very abstract concepts this week. Volume and displacement are not easy concepts to grasp but expertly, our teachers have used picture story books and hands-on demonstrations and experiences to illustrate and explore them.

Year 9 Minecraft Challenge

Yesterday I joined the Year 9 students and teachers to view a battle fought between 9A and 9B on the Minecraft battlefield. In recognition of National Science Week, the task involved the students being transported to a random biome and then directed to invent a new animal within that biome. They needed to consider the environment they were in and what adaptation the animal would have in order to live effectively within that biome. The biome was not disclosed to the students until the launch of the challenge.

YMCA Aftercare Program Afternoon Tea Treats!

During this difficult time YMCA have still be providing a safe and fun service for children whose parents ar essential workers. This gives the children the opportunity to interact and socialise with other children, maintaining their social skills while also engaging with each other in a positive manner.

Next Week is National Science Week which provides students and their families with opportunities to view our world through the eyes of all things SCIENCE!. Teachers have planned some exciting science experiences next week with the secondary science teachers leading the way with a mix of the week's science focus being related to the deep blue (oceans) and careers in science.

Remote Learning Update

Our virtual learning spaces continue to be a wonderful place to visit while students undertake remote and flexible learning programs. It is important to share the range and variety of learning taking place in our online forums and to celebrate the work and learning being enjoyed. Each student’s home is a learning hub where study nooks, desks and chairs have been set up and where students are supported by parents motivated by a thirst to learn.

Yesterday marked the first day of mandated mask-wearing in Metropolitan Melbourne and the Shire of Mitchell. As required, staff at Featherbrook College all arrived masked-up and playing their part to ensure this extra barrier was in place to mitigate further spread of the coronavirus. There were some who donned the commercial variety while others had taken out their trusty sewing machine and got to work on creatively making their own.

This week students were learning about free range eggs and were challenged to make some style of egg dish. For many, this was the first time they had ever made an egg dish before which is egg-citing. This coming week they will be designing chicken coops!

SECONDARY TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN STUDENTS INNOVATE

Students were asked to design a prototype of a product that could be used during the pandemic of COVID-19. Students created solutions to opening doors without using their hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Some really great designs were inventive and some students even trialled their ideas at home with whatever materials they had on hand.

Our Biodiversity Learning Story

Wildlife Victoria Says 'Thank You'

Perhaps like at no other time in recent times, is it important to look beyond our immediate circumstances and to give what we can to others, to vulnerable others. The recent bushfires devastated so many rural communities. Our very special Australian indigenous animals suffered greatly and we at Featherbrook College have sought to play our part in rehabilitating surviving animals, indeed species which, in some cases are fighting for their very survival.

YEAR 9 STUDENTS LEAVE FOR MALDON CAMP TODAY!

The much anticipated Year 9 camp began today. Boarding a bus at 9am this morning, our senior students made their way to Maldon in central Victoria to experience a little bit of the Victorian gold rush era, to learn a little bit more about themselves and their peers and to become a little fitter through some bike riding, rock climbing and swimming. Importantly, our senior students will bond together ahead of a year of academic challenge. They will return to school with a vigour and focus that will support their learning pathway endeavours in this, their final year at Featherbrook. .
